Choosing a Spark Plug

Learn what to check when choosing a spark plug: thread size, reach, seat type, heat range and gap. Compare part numbers and confirm your engine's requirements.

The Importance of the Spark Plug

Spark plugs are essential for the operation of the engine. Their function is to trigger the combustion of the air-fuel mixture inside the cylinders, allowing the engine to function correctly. Choosing the wrong spark plug can lead to inefficient combustion, which translates into higher fuel consumption and reduced performance.

How to Find the Perfect Spark Plug

To find the right spark plug, it is important to follow these steps:

  • Consult the vehicle manual: The manual provides specific information on the type of spark plug suitable for your car or motorcycle model.
  • Use cross-reference tools: Use the spark plug cross-reference tool to explore listed part numbers from other manufacturers, then verify the application with the manufacturer.
  • Check the specifications: Compare thread diameter, thread reach, seat type, heat range and electrode gap with the engine manufacturer's requirements. Electrode material alone does not establish compatibility.

How to Use a Spark Plug Cross Reference

Start with the manufacturer and the complete part number printed on your existing plug or its packaging. You can browse NGK spark plugs, Bosch spark plugs, Denso spark plugs or Champion spark plugs, then select a code to view its listed cross references and available specifications.

A cross reference is a starting point, not a fitment guarantee. Heat-range numbering systems differ between manufacturers, and a similar-looking plug may have a different reach or seat. If specifications are missing or conflicting, consult the engine maker's application catalogue rather than assuming a listed alternative will fit.

Signs That Indicate When to Replace a Spark Plug

A worn spark plug can cause ignition problems, difficulty idling, and a decrease in performance. If you notice difficulty starting the engine, increased fuel consumption, or if your motorcycle or car has inconsistent performance, it may be time to replace your spark plugs.
